The Smart Art of David DeGrand

Sweating snowmen, tree people riddled with nails, dripping elephants, mishapen midgets, murdering madmen. These are reasons why I love the work of David DeGrand. If I was a gallery owner, I'd snatch up his art and display it on walls for all to see.

His imaginative doodles of "weirdos" are unending. I love going to his blog and taking a peek at his moleskin sketchbook pages, one after one. What ARE the strange implications of his images? Are these sweating and melting creatures suffering global warming paranoia as we are? Are these wooden, truncated plant people soft and maleable and easily punctured with "nails" from a cruel society? Do the grotesque, oozing faces reflect an outlook of fellow humans as afflicted with deformities and poor personal hygiene? We could ask these questions and more...but I'll spare you the pyschoanalysis.

On the surface, their humorous expressions and wacky proportions make me laugh. I don't even need much of a narrative, I get a kick out of creating scenarios for these characters. My hat's off to David DeGrand, and his sophisticated, twisted, and grotesque view of the world. His vision brings to mind Ivan Brunetti, another amazing comic artist with a definite voice and perspective for our modern times. They really keep ME drawing!

If you're craving a bit more of a narrative or full color pieces, be sure to take a looksy at his website. (Although, I believe he's updating it. But, that's more reason to come back.)

On top of his fabulous skills, David seems to be a COOL guy as well. Look at the personalized, original drawing he mailed to me...WITH STICKERS!!! (see below) Get your hands off mine and get your own! He even doodled on the envelope.
